OBSESSED WITH SKINCARE? SAY HELLO TO DERMOREXIA.

Skincare, once a minimalist routine, has spiraled into an obsession now termed ‘dermorexia’ — with enthusiasts relying on multiple products and elaborate regimens to achieve perfect skin.

WHAT IS DERMOREXIA?:

  • It is a term describing the obsession with skincare routines and achieving flawless skin.
  • The term is coined by beauty researcher and writer Jessica DeFino.
  • As reported by Dazed Magazine, DeFino defines dermorexia as a ‘fixation on skincare and reaching an aesthetic goal that becomes harmful, negatively affecting the health of our skin as well as our mental health.

WHY THE OBSESSION:

“When people see their favorite influencers or celebrities looking flawless, they crave the same beauty, contributing to compulsive purchasing.. They forget about the heavy editing. AI filters, makeup, and lighting behind these looks.”

“There are countless videos promoting skincare routines with 10-20 products. These often make viewers believe that this is the only way to achieve beauty.”

TEENAGERS ARE THE MOST VULNERABLE:

“Teens and tweens are particularly vulnerable.” Social media trends like the “Sephora girl” aesthetic push them into adult skincare routines. “At an age when identity is still forming, this pressure can trigger anxiety, low self-esteem, and body image issues.”

SIGNS OF DERMOREXIA:

  • Constantly examining your skin.
  • Following every skincare trend.
  • Frequently changing routines.
  • Feeling anxious on skipping a skincare routine.
  • Avoiding social interactions due to skin concerns.
  • Obsessing over minor blemishes.
  • Skin picking.
  • Hoarding skincare products.
  • Buying new ones before finishing old ones.

HARMFUL FOR SKIN:

The ‘more is better’ mindset can harm the skin. Excessive or ever-changing routines can damage the skin barrier. Overusing a variety of products without understanding your skin can cause acne, rashes, redness, and sensitivity.

FOLLOW THE LESS-IS MORE APPROACH:

  • Stick to basics like cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.
  • Stay hydrated and be patient; results take 4-6 weeks. Avoid impulsive or trendy purchases. Focus on skin health, not perfection.
  • Consult a dermatologist before using new products.

IMPACT ON MENTAL HEALTH:

“Skincare obsession can cause stress and anxiety. Chasing unrealistic beauty standards can lead to feelings of inadequacy. It can distort perceptions, making minor flaws feel major. “People get so used to their filtered image that their real reflection can trigger anxiety and depression further harming their mental health.”
