HEALTHY HABITS FOR HOT DAYS.

Keep summer-related concerns at bay with these simple yet effective steps.

As the temperature soars, so do heat-related illnesses. However, with a few preventive measures, you can safeguard your well-being and sail through the season. Let’s find out how.

BE WARY OF THESE AILMENTS:

The changing climate and heat can lead to a spate of seasonal health concerns such as dehydration, heatstroke, skin rashes, respiratory issues, and food-and waterborne illnesses. Thus, staying cautious is imperative.

“Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause exhaustion or even heatstroke, while contaminated food or water can lead to to gastroenteritis, typhoid, and hepatitis. Additionally, excessive sweating can cause fungal infections and prickly heat, so it’s advisable to keep your body, especially your face, feet, and neck clean at all times.”

Pollution, combined with heat, can aggravate asthma and allergies.

STAY HYDRATED:

To stay in the pink of health this season, it’s vital to keep sipping on liquids. “One of the most important things that you can do is to stay hydrated. Drink at least two and a half to three liters of water daily, and include fluids like coconut and lemon water, and fresh fruit juices while avoiding sugary and fizzy drinks, which often do more harm than good.”

Those experiencing symptoms of lethargy or heatstroke can consume an electrolyte mix (oral rehydration salts) to replenish essential salts lost through sweat, especially after spending time outdoors. This should be followed up with a visit to a doctor.

CONSUME FRESH PRODUCE:

Through summer, opt for light, home-cooked meals and seasonal fruits and vegetables like watermelon, mangoes, muskmelon, and cucumber. These foods are not only hydrating but also rich in anti-oxidants and essential nutrients.

Avoid street food during this time.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN:

Wear light cotton clothes, sunglasses, and carry a hat or umbrella when stepping outside. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply it every two to three hours, especially if you sweat a lot. Also, try to stay indoors between 12 pm and 3 pm, when the sun is at its harshest.

DON’T IGNORE SYMPTOMS:

If you experience symptoms like high ever, persistent vomiting, severe weakness, or rashes that spread quickly, seek medical attention immediately. These could be signs of a heatstroke, infection, or viral illness that needs prompt attention.

Summer can be harsh, but with the right precautions, you can make the most of the season while staying healthy.
