RISK OF CHASING ANTI-AGING FADS.

Want to regain youth with drips, shots, and supplements? You could be damaging your organs instead.

WHAT IS GLUTATHIONE, AND IS IT SAFE?

Glutathione is a naturally occuring antioxidant produced in the liver. Made up of three amino acids — glutamine, cysteine, and glycine — it plays a key role in preventing cell damage, supporting metabolic detoxification, and regulating immune responses. It’s particularly important for high-energy organs like the liver and kidneys, which rely on glutathione to filter toxins and maintain healthy function.

“Glutathione was not originally developed for skin whitening.” It’s primary medical use is to manage fatty liver disease, improve insulin sensitivity, reduce Parkinson’s symptoms, etc. It’s popularity in aesthetic therapy circles stems from an incidental skin-lightening effect observed during medical medical treatments — a benefit that has since been heavily commercialized.

Glutathione helped preserve mitochondrial function and reduce oxidative stress. However, experts caution that cosmetic use — especially via IV infusions — carries risks, particularly when contaminated or administered in unregulated doses.

“In India, the glutathione trend entered around 2012-2014 , largely through dermatology chains, salons, and online platforms. It was presented as a ‘beauty vitamin’ or ‘wellness shot.’ which is a gross mischaracterization.” However, glutathione is not approved by the US FDA or India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) for cosmetic use.

Glutathione is often paired with Vitamin C. There is also the risk of skin cancer if used long term, since glutathione affects melanin production. “Even more concerning is that these injections often involve local anesthetics, which are cardiotoxic. Improper administration can trigger dangerous heart rhythm disturbances and cardiac arrest in extreme cases. The danger isn’t just in the drug, but also in who’s administering it and how.” These drips are not meant to be taken casually or without medical supervision.”

BRIDE CRAZE:

In India, the glutathione trend has spread to tier 2 and tier 3 cities through e-commerce, Instagram marketing, and testimonials from influencers.

NEED FOR TIGHTER REGULATION:

Experts are not calling for an urgent regulation advisory on the cosmetic use of injectable anti-aging drugs in India — similar to public safety notices issued in other countries. “The public must be made aware that IV infusions are medical procedures, not salon services.”

Injectable glutathione should be strictly classified under Schedule H drugs, requiring a physician’s prescription,. “The mislabeling of a drug as a ‘beauty supplement’ creates a false sense of safety among consumers — especially young women who are most susceptible to the influence of social media.”
