The incidence of breast cancer is increasing at an alarming rate.
“In India, one in 22 women have a risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection is our best step towards cure.”
KNOW YOUR RISK:
There are non-modifiable risk factors that we cannot change:
These include:
- Female gender.
- Increasing age.
- Family history of cancer.
- Early age of menarche.
- Menopause after 55.
Modifiable risk factors that increase risk include:
- First child after the age of 30 years.
- Not breast-feeding the baby.
- Not having children.
- Obesity, especially post-menopausal weight gain.
- Prolonged hormone replacement therapy after menopause.
HOW TO DETECT BREAST CANCER EARLY:
“For women without genetic mutation or strong family history (average risk), X-ray mammogram once every two years for women aged 40-74 is recommended. For high-risk individuals (genetic mutations or family history of cancer, reach out to your breast surgeon for more detailed information.”
COMMON SIGNS:
- Painless lump in the breast or armpit.
- Nipple discharge/ retraction.
- Changes in the skin over the breast like puckering, redness, thickening.
- Change in the shape or size of one breast.
- Pain could be a sign of advanced stage of cancer.
NAVIGATING BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS:
“Diagnosis is done by using the triple test, which includes clinical examination, imaging (mammogram and USG) and confirmation by biopsy. Do not panic or fear the unknown. GO prepared for your visit to the oncologist, so you can ask questions and alleviate your anxiety. Awareness creates knowledge and knowledge gives us power. It is our best defense against breast cancer.”
